IntraVenous (I.V) Sedation in Dentistry

Why IV sedation?

At Khoury Dental Clinic, we understand that dental anxiety is real. That’s why we offer IV sedation dentistry — a safe, effective way to help patients relax during dental treatments. Whether you’re nervous, need multiple procedures, or simply want maximum comfort, IV sedation makes your dental visit stress-free.

What is IV Sedation?

IV (intravenous) sedation involves delivering a sedative medication directly into your bloodstream. It doesn’t put you completely to sleep like general anesthesia — instead, you remain conscious but deeply relaxed. Most patients remember little to nothing about the procedure.

Who Can Benefit From IV Sedation?

IV sedation is especially helpful for patients who:

  • Experience severe dental anxiety or phobia.

  • Need dental implants, grafting, or longer surgeries.

  • Have had traumatic past dental experiences.

  • Have a low pain threshold or highly sensitive teeth.

  • Want to complete several treatments in one appointment.

Safety & Monitoring

At Khoury Dental Clinic, your safety is our priority. During IV sedation:

  • We continuously monitor your heart rate, oxygen, and blood pressure.

  • A licensed Anesthesiologist Physician is present.

  • Recovery is fast — most patients go home the same day with an escort.

FAQ about IV Sedation? We’ve got you covered.

Usually, we recommend not eating or drinking for at least 6–8 hours before your appointment, especially for solid food. Small sips of water may sometimes be allowed up to 2 hours before, but we’ll give you clear instructions based on your case. This reduces the risk of nausea or complications during sedation.

No. IV sedation keeps you awake but relaxed, while general anesthesia makes you fully unconscious and requires a hospital setting.

No. You will be deeply relaxed, and local anesthesia is still used to numb the treatment area. Most patients report little to no memory of the procedure.

  • Most healthy adults are good candidates. However, we carefully review your medical history, medications, allergies, and overall health first.

  • Good candidates: patients with dental anxiety, phobia, or those undergoing long/complex procedures.

  • Caution or not suitable: patients with severe heart or lung disease, uncontrolled diabetes or hypertension, pregnancy, or certain neurological conditions may need special clearance.

IV sedation is not needed for routine procedures like cleanings, small fillings, or simple treatments. At Khoury Dental Clinic, we use IV sedation only for surgical and complex cases — such as wisdom tooth extractions, dental implants, bone grafting, and longer or more advanced surgeries. This ensures your comfort and safety while keeping sedation reserved for when it’s truly beneficial.
